Expectations

Users are expected to comply with all AVC policies and procedures with regard to password integrity and security. You should never share your userid and password with another person. No one from AVC's Help Desk will ever ask for your login and password. We will never send an email with a link or request for such information. WE DON'T WANT IT!!

Conditions

  • Standard Use Accounts (Students, Faculty, Staff) Passwords are good for 730 days (2 years) from the date of last reset.

  • Protected Data Access - Passwords are good for 90 days from the date of last reset

  • Inactive Accounts - Any account left inactive, not logged into successfully for 180 days, will be disabled and will require contacting the Help Desk for reactivation.

  • Systems will now prohibit the reuse of your three (3) most recent passwords.

Criteria

  • Minimum 12 characters, Maximum of 20 characters
    The longer the better & more secure, see the examples below

  • Mix of Case & Numeric, with minimum one special character

  • Don’t Panic, this isn’t as difficult as it sounds – build a phrase you will remember

    • examples - according to security.org

      • NotMyPaSSw0rd - that's 13 characters
        100,000 years to hack

      • ILoveMyJ0batAVC!! – that's 17 characters
        1,000,000,000,000 - that's 1 trillion years

      • ThisI$NotMyPa$$word – that's 19 characters
        39,000,000,000,000,000,000 years to hack
        - that's 39 quadrillion years

Changing Your Password

  • Use the AVC ID icon located on the campus computer desktop

  • Go directly to https://avcid.avc.edu

  • Call the Information Technology Services HelpDesk at extension 6535

FAQ

Q: Can I change my password inside of  myAVC/Gmail/Canvas/other software?

A: These passwords are handled by the AVC ID Single Sign-On system and will need to be changed in this single location.

Q: How long do I have to wait after changing my password to use one of the sites?

A: As soon as you change your password! There is no delay as the other services are checking with AVC ID for your current credentials.

Q: May I use two factor authentication?

A: Yes, it is now required and can be set up using a few different tools. Please see the AVC ID training page for instructions
